Sinks, mixers, dishwashers and washing machines, connected so each one drains through a trap at the right height.

Request a call-out

Kitchen plumbing in Pietermaritzburg is mostly about what leaves through the waste: the sink, the dishwasher and the washing machine, each through a trap. Msunduzi's by-laws make the drain yours as far as a point inside your boundary, and a blockage past it can still be your bill. The quote shows where every connection goes.

Six kitchen jobs, and the rule behind each

What the work involves, and the one thing worth knowing before it starts.

Sink replacement
The work: the sink, its waste and trap, and the connectors to the supply.
Worth knowing: drains that run through a kitchen must have their rodding access outside it, apart from the sink's own waste (SANS 10400-P).
Sink mixers
The work: a mixer fed at balanced pressure, hot on the left.
Worth knowing: SANS 10252-1 designs an aerated sink mixer for 50 kPa, and puts the hot tap, or a lever's hot position, on the left.
A slow or blocked sink
The work: the trap and the waste pipe to the gully cleared.
Worth knowing: past the gully it is a drain, covered on the drain unblocking page.
Dishwasher connection
The work: a supply with its own valve, and the drain hose into a trap.
Worth knowing: Bosch asks for 50 kPa to 1 MPa at the inlet and at least 10 litres a minute.
Washing machine connection
The work: a washing machine tap, and a standpipe or trap at the right height.
Worth knowing: Haier wants the drain outlet 80 to 100 cm high. Any lower and the machine can drain while it fills.
Gas hob
The work: the cylinder, the gas line and the certificate, on the gas installation page.
Worth knowing: SANS 10087-1 (2008 edition) wants a kitchen with gas appliances ventilated by at least one airbrick of 160 cm² in an outside wall.

Grease you pour away can come back as a bill

Msunduzi's by-laws ban fat that can block a sewer, put the drain to the connection point in the owner's hands, and let the Council charge for clearing its own pipe when your drain blocked it.

The municipality has said it plainly. In 2023 Msunduzi's municipal manager told The Witness that sewers "are seen by many as a waste disposal system where fats and grease from cooking is disposed", in an article in which the city acknowledged a backlog of sewer blockages and blockages its rodding equipment could not clear. In September 2026 a municipal spokesperson also named foreign objects in the sewer among the causes of blockages.

The Water Services By-laws back that with a rule. Section 61 forbids putting anything into a sewer, oil, grease, fat and detergents included, that can obstruct the flow in a drain or a sewer. Fat that pours from a hot pan as a liquid sets as it cools in the pipe, and for most of its length that pipe is your own.

  1. The sink, its trap and its waste pipe.
  2. The gully, where the kitchen's waste water meets the drain outside.
  3. Rodding access. Drains through a kitchen are cleaned from outside it.
  4. The connection point, about 1 m inside the boundary. The owner maintains everything before it.
  5. The Council's connecting sewer. If your drains caused a blockage here, the owner pays to clear it.
  6. The sewer in the street.
A plot drawn for this page, not to scale. The points that mark who maintains what come from Msunduzi's Water Services By-laws; your drain may run differently.

The by-laws set that boundary precisely. Your drainage installation runs from the sink to a connection point about a metre inside your property, and from there the Council's connecting sewer carries it to the sewer beyond the boundary. The owner or occupier maintains the drainage installation and the sewer connection on the property.

The Council's side is not automatically free either. Say your drains back up because the Council's connecting sewer is blocked: once the Council is satisfied the blockage started in your drainage installation, clearing it is charged to the owner. The Council may also clear a blockage in a private drain, asked or not, and charge for it, and it is not liable for putting back paving or lawn it lifts to get there.

Two kitchen fittings carry rules of their own. SANS 10400-P limits in-sink food-waste disposers: anything over 15 A and 550 W needs registering with the municipality, or a place on an approved plan, before it joins the drainage, and every disposer, large or small, empties through a P-trap whose seal is 75 mm deep or more. A grease trap is required where a sink drains to a French drain; the by-laws' own grease-trap rule is written for industrial effluent, not houses.

Wipe the fat out of the pan and into the bin. Past the trap it is in a drain you maintain, and past the connection point it can still be on your bill.

Dishwasher and washing machine connections

Two machines and two rules that matter: each drains through a trap, and each drain sits at the right height.

Draining

SANS 10400-P is short on this: a dishwasher or washing machine permanently connected to the drainage has to discharge through a trap into a waste pipe. For a dishwasher beside the sink, that can be the sink's own trap with a nozzle for the hose, which Bosch's connection guide calls a siphon with a discharge nozzle.

Height decides whether a washing machine behaves. Haier's South African guidance puts the drain outlet at 80 to 100 cm; with the hose on the floor, or an outlet below 80 cm, the machine siphons itself and drains while it fills.

Supply

A tap or valve per machine means a leaking hose can be isolated while the sink carries on working. Bosch asks for between 50 kPa and 1 MPa at a dishwasher's inlet, a flow of at least 10 litres a minute, and a new inlet hose whenever the appliance is replaced. Msunduzi's by-laws also make the owner prevent back-siphonage at any tap a hose can be connected to.

What a kitchen quote lists

  • The sink, mixer and connectors, if we supply them.
  • The waste and trap, with a nozzle for the dishwasher if there is one.
  • A valve for each machine, and the hose connections.
  • A standpipe or outlet at the height the washing machine needs.
  • Any change to the drainage, and the permission it needs.
  • Making good under the counter and in the wall.

Before the plumber arrives, read the connection page in the machine's manual: the pressure range and the drain height are both there.

From under the counter to a working kitchen

The order a kitchen job follows.

  1. Look under the counter

The supply, the waste, the trap, and where each machine will stand.

  2. A written quote

Each fitting and connection listed, and any drainage change with its permission.

  3. Connect and test

Supplies on, each waste run with water, and each machine checked filling and draining.

  4. Hand over

The valves shown to you, and what is better kept out of the sink.

Kitchen plumbing questions

Cost first, then the machines, the drain and the rules.

How much does it cost to install a kitchen sink in Pietermaritzburg?

It depends on whether the new sink lines up with the old waste and supply, and on what is under the counter. A like-for-like sink on the same waste is a short job. A different bowl layout, a new position, or a dishwasher joining the waste adds pipework and sometimes a new trap. The quote lists the sink, the mixer, the trap and the connectors separately.

Can you connect my new dishwasher?

Yes. It needs a cold supply with its own valve, enough pressure for its inlet (the manual gives the range), and a drain that discharges through a trap. Use the hose that came with the new machine, not the old one: Bosch's connection guide says a new inlet hose must always be used when the appliance is replaced.

Can the dishwasher drain into the sink's waste?

Yes, through a trap. SANS 10400-P requires a permanently connected dishwasher to discharge through a trap into a waste pipe, so its hose goes to a nozzle on the sink's trap rather than into an open pipe at the back of the cupboard.

Why does my washing machine drain while it is filling?

Its drain is too low. When the outlet sits below the height the maker gives (80 to 100 cm, for Haier), the water siphons out as fast as it comes in. Raising the hose or fitting a taller standpipe normally cures it.

Can I put a food waste disposer in my sink?

A small one, yes, as long as its outlet goes through a P-trap holding at least 75 mm of water. A bigger unit, past 15 A and 550 W on its rating plate, must first be registered with the municipality or appear on an approved plan, under SANS 10400-P. Read the rating plate before you buy.

Do I need a grease trap at home?

Only in some cases. SANS 10400-P calls for one where a sink drains to a French drain, and where grease could obstruct the flow in a drain or sewer; Msunduzi's by-laws require them for industrial effluent. On a house connected to the sewer, the first defence is keeping fat out of the sink.

Can the sink move to an island?

Yes, but it is drainage work. The waste has to reach the drain with enough fall, and in Msunduzi altering a drainage installation needs the Council's written permission and an inspection before it is covered. Where a drain runs under the building, SANS 10400-P does not allow its access point to be inside. We plan the route before the island is built.

Do I need a plumber just to replace a kitchen tap?

Not by law. Msunduzi's by-laws reserve installation work for a qualified plumber but leave out the repair or replacement of an existing pipe or fitting, so swapping a mixer on the same supply is not restricted to one. New work, such as a supply to a new position or a connection for a machine that was never there, is for a qualified plumber.

Often part of the same job

The bathroom down the passage, a drain that will not clear, or gas for the hob.
