Drain Unblocking
in Pietermaritzburg
Sinks, toilets, gullies and the main drain to the street. Cleared first, then traced, so you know why it blocked.
Request a call-outDrain unblocking in Pietermaritzburg is two jobs: clearing the line so the house works again, and finding out why it blocked so it does not happen next week. If your gully only overflows in a storm, the cause may be rainwater rather than a blockage, and we tell you which before quoting.
Where a blocked drain is usually blocked
What you notice inside the house points to where the trouble sits outside it.
- One basin or shower drains slowly
- Usually: hair and soap in the trap or the short branch behind it.
- The fix: clear the trap and branch; nothing outside needs touching.
- The kitchen sink backs up
- Usually: fat and food set in the pipe between the sink and the gully.
- The fix: clear the line, flush it hot, and look at the gully while we are there.
- The toilet gurgles when something else drains
- Usually: a partial blockage further down the main drain, or a blocked vent.
- The fix: clear from the nearest access point and test with water.
- The gully overflows, but only in the rain
- Usually: rainwater getting into the sewer, or the municipal sewer filling up in the street.
- The fix: trace where the water comes from; reroute it if it is yours.
- Several fittings back up at once
- Usually: the main line running from the house to the boundary manhole.
- The fix: clear from a rodding eye or manhole, then check whether a broken pipe or roots caused it.
- A drain smell with no blockage
- Usually: a trap that has dried out, a broken vent, or a cracked pipe.
- The fix: find which one, then refill, replace or repair it.
If it only overflows when it rains, look at the downpipes
Msunduzi names illegal connections to the sewer among the causes of its blockages. A roof downpipe led into a gully is one you can check from your own garden.
Msunduzi received 3,804 reports of blocked sewers in the 2021/22 financial year, according to a 2022 report on its water services, and many of those blockages went on to pollute rivers and streams. Asked about recurring sewage spills in January 2024, the municipality named three causes: ageing infrastructure, improper disposal of waste, and illegal connections to the sewerage system.
The last of those is the easiest to miss on your own property. A sewer pipe is sized for what leaves a house: basins, showers, toilets and the kitchen sink. A roof in a Maritzburg summer downpour sheds far more than that, and if a downpipe or a paved yard drains into a gully, all of it goes into the sewer. The two systems are meant to stay apart, and the stormwater side exists to take rain to the river.
- Gully. Where kitchen and bathroom water meets the drain outside.
- Downpipe led into the gully. Roof water in the sewer: the connection to look for.
- A downpipe led to the stormwater side, where rain belongs.
- Private drain, from the house to the boundary.
- Msunduzi's sewer in the street.
That gives you a simple test. If the gully only overflows during or just after a storm, and drains normally on dry days, the problem is volume rather than a blockage: rainwater getting into your drain, or a municipal sewer that is already full in the street. Rodding the drain will not fix either.
If it overflows on dry days as well, there is a blockage, and the question is which section it sits in. We find that before quoting, because clearing your line does nothing for a full municipal sewer, and reporting the sewer does nothing for roots in your own pipe.
Moving a downpipe across to the stormwater side is usually a small job, and it takes a load off a sewer network that the municipality itself calls ageing.
Watch the gully in the next storm. If it only overflows in the rain, water is getting in; it is not a blockage.
How a blocked drain gets cleared and traced
Four steps, and the second one is often enough on its own.
Tell us the pattern
Which fittings are affected, since when, and whether it gets worse when it rains.
Clear it
From the nearest access point: the trap, the gully, a rodding eye or the boundary manhole.
Test and trace
Run water through and watch it leave. If it blocked for a reason, find the reason.
Quote any repair
A broken pipe or a downpipe in the gully is priced separately, after you have seen it.
Drain questions from Pietermaritzburg homes
Cost first, then whose drain it is, then the rest.
What does drain unblocking cost in Pietermaritzburg?
It depends on where the blockage sits and how we can reach it. A trap under a basin is a different job from a main drain under paving with no access point. Clearing is quoted first; if the clearing shows a broken pipe or a wrong connection behind the blockage, that repair is quoted separately so you can decide on it.
Is a blocked drain my responsibility or the municipality's?
It depends on where the blockage is. Drains inside the property are generally the owner's; the sewer in the street is Msunduzi's. The exact point where one becomes the other is set by the municipality's by-laws, so we find the blockage first and show you which side it is on before you pay anyone to clear it.
Can you reroute a downpipe that drains into my gully?
Yes. Leading a roof downpipe to the stormwater side instead of into a gully is usually a small job: a few lengths of pipe and a bend, sometimes a short channel across paving. It is quoted on its own once we have confirmed where the downpipe goes.
Should I pour drain cleaner down it first?
It is better not to. Caustic drain cleaner rarely shifts a solid blockage, and it leaves a pipe full of chemical that splashes back when the drain is opened. If you have already used some, mention it in your request, so we know to take care.
Why does the toilet gurgle when the bath drains?
Because air is being pulled through the toilet's trap. That usually means a partial blockage further down the shared drain, or a vent pipe that is blocked or missing. It is worth sorting before it turns into a full blockage.
How do I report a blocked municipal sewer?
Report it to Msunduzi Municipality and write down the reference number you are given. A manhole overflowing in the street, or sewage coming up in several neighbours' yards at once, points to the municipal line rather than yours.
How do I stop the kitchen sink blocking again?
Keep fat out of it. Wipe pans with paper before washing them, put a strainer in the plughole, and run hot water after greasy washing-up. Fat that goes down warm sets further along the pipe, where it catches everything that follows.
Do you unblock drains in complexes and blocks of flats?
Yes. Shared drains in sectional title schemes usually belong to the body corporate, so it helps to know who the managing agent is. We will tell you whether the blockage is in your unit's branch or in the shared line.
